Also available in:
No results found. The humanitarian crisis in Northern Mozambique has rapidly escalated, leaving an estimated 1.3 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and protection in 2021. The main shocks leading to the deteriorating humanitarian and food security situation are armed conflict, natural hazards and the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on economic activity in the region. These shocks have disrupted the agricultural livelihoods of vulnerable people in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa and heightened food insecurity. Providing timely support along the seasonal calendar will help maximize gains and enhance production, benefiting communities most at need. -

The deterioration of the security situation in the Centre-North, East, North, Boucle of Mouhoun and Sahel regions in Burkina Faso has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with an exponential increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) throughout 2019. In a context of increased insecurity, climate change, exponential growth of the number of displaced people and rising levels of food insecurity and malnutrition, it is crucial to support the agriculture-based livelihoods of vulnerable populations and to quickly improve their food security. -

In Burkina Faso, over 16 percent of the population is expected to be in high acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season, if appropriate assistance isn’t provided. This will include, for the first time, 19 867 people in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5). Around 4 in 5 people rely on agriculture for subsistence, and need urgent support to restore food production. Every USD 1 spent on supporting farmers with a vegetable production package yields over 20 times its value in cabbages, onions and tomatoes.

DocumentOther documentNutrition and food systems. A report by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition of the Committee on World Food Security. September 2017 2018At its 42nd session in October 2015, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) requested the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) to prepare a report on Nutrition and Food Systems, to be presented at CFS 44 in October 2017. This topic is highly relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the implementation of the 2014 Rome Declaration on Nutrition, the subsequent Decade of Action for Nutrition, and the fulfilment of the right to adequate food. The purpose of this report is two-fold: (i) to analyse how food systems influence people’s dietary patterns and nutritional outcomes; and (ii) to highlight effective policies and programmes that have the potential to shape food systems, contribute to improved nutrition and ensure that food is produced, distributed and consumed in a sustainable manner that protects the right to adequate food for all. This report is illustrated by short case studies reflecting the wide variety of practical experiences in diff erent contexts. It also provides a set of action-oriented recommendations addressed to states and other stakeholders in order to inform CFS engagement in advancing nutrition and CFS contribution to the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025).

Global, regional and country trends 2000–2018

No results found. The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
