    In Angola available projections agree that smallholder farmers would have severe impacts from climate change given the rainfall dependence of most staple crops, combined with unsustainable agricultural practices and prevalent soil erosion. This report presents the results of the evaluation of the IRCEA project which was implemented to strengthen the climate resilience of agropastoral systems in vulnerable areas of Bié, Huambo, Malanje and Huíla provinces. The project was relevant to the resilience of target beneficiaries and to the government's priority needs. Its effectiveness and efficiency were moderately satisfactory due to several factors highlighted in the report. Though the project sustainability was moderately unlikely, the project created positive environmental and social effects and satisfactorily integrated and empowered women FFS members. The report provides recommendations to FAO on the support it should provide to the government to ensure better integration of the FFS model and CCA/SLM tools in future similar projects and to ensure the management of several project performance factors.

    Iraq has experienced significant and interconnected political, economic, environmental and security challenges over the past few years, and the effects of climate change are exacerbating the situation. Increased temperatures, outdated irrigation infrastructures, droughts, energy shortage, the lack of skills of both farmers and extension officers and an incomplete policy and strategic framework were the main constraints to climate change adaptation in Iraq, especially, in the farming communities of the central and southern plains. In addition, given that about 25 percent of the target areas’ population is employed in agriculture and produce around 40 percent of the country’s rice, working to stabilize the water supply would contribute to ensure food security and social stability in the country. This project aimed to support Iraq national institutions to develop a full Green Climate Fund (GCF) project to enhance climate resilience of rural livelihoods through climate-adaptive technologies and good farming practices that will stabilize water availability in the governorates of Karbala, Muthanna and Najaf. Through its main output, the drafting of a full funding proposal (FFP), the project aimed to mobilize significant financial resources that will improve the most vulnerable population livelihoods (around 650 000 individuals, among which 321 000 are women). The drafting of the GCF sought to closely engage government entities, researchers and agricultural extension officers, and looked to reach at least 1.9 million farmers to foster their cropping systems under improved institutional arrangements and climate-smart agriculture methodologies and use of land.

    The Islamic Republic of Iran is experiencing a severe escalation of water scarcity, due to key drivers such as demographic growth, the tendency to increase food self-sufficiency, urbanization expansion, energy demand, and overall socio-economic development. This is further compounded by the negative impacts of climate change and the considerable degradation of water quality. In this context, Urmia Lake Basin (ULB), a vast hypersaline lake in the northwest of the country, has faced intense pressures over the last three decades and is in a state of ecological crisis, with major impacts on its biodiversity and socio-economic conditions. Since 2013, the Government has made an intensive and comprehensive effort to restore Urmia Lake; however, the condition of the lake was still critical and more support was required. Against this background, this project, funded by the Government of Japan, aimed to contribute to more sustainable, productive and climate-resilient agricultural and rural systems, with a positive impact on the environment and on the water balance (inflow-outflow) of Urmia Lake.

    The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
    Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum

    This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
