In Burkina Faso, the 2017/18 agropastoral campaign was marked by food and biomass deficits, the effects of which were exacerbated by the fragile situation in the country. Since January 2019, insecurity has continued to worsen due to recurrent attacks perpetrated by non-state armed groups, triggering massive population displacements, thus exacerbating the vulnerability of communities further resulting in increased humanitarian needs and significant challenges for the country. Thanks to funding from Sweden, FAO is supporting 18 700 households through various activities (cash-based interventions, agricultural and livestock production support) in order to meet their immediate needs, while ensuring that the root causes of their vulnerability are addressed in order to reduce dependency on food aid. -

No results found.The Sahel region is experiencing a food crisis, with 38.3 million people projected to be in acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season (June–August 2022) – a fourfold increase compared with 2019 – and millions more at risk of slipping into a crisis situation or worse. The effects of climate change in the region are worsening irregular rainfall and climatic shocks such as floods. Both Burkina Faso and the Niger are especially vulnerable to flood risk. Thanks to the contribution of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) to the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) – Anticipatory Action window, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is acting early in flood-prone areas in the Sahel through cash assistance, capacity building and veterinary support to protect the assets and livelihoods of vulnerable pastoralists. -

The deterioration of the security situation in the Centre-North, East, North, Boucle of Mouhoun and Sahel regions in Burkina Faso has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with an exponential increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) throughout 2019. In a context of increased insecurity, climate change, exponential growth of the number of displaced people and rising levels of food insecurity and malnutrition, it is crucial to support the agriculture-based livelihoods of vulnerable populations and to quickly improve their food security.

No results found.The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture presents the first global assessment of biodiversity for food and agriculture worldwide. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. It concludes with a discussion of needs and challenges in the future management of biodiversity for food and agriculture. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture. -

Doctors Global Programme – A farmer-to-farmer training programme

The Soil Doctors programme is developed under the umbrella of the Global Soil Partnership and promotes the establishment of a farmer-to-farmer training system. The Soil Doctors Global Programme aims to build the capacity of smallholder farmers on the practice of sustainable soil management and, by doing so, support governmental agencies and organizations working on agricultural extension at the field level (promoting broader impact and a reduction of costs). Trainings will also rely on the establishment of demonstration farms and experimental fields by the Soil Doctors, which might attract the interest of research institutes and universities involved in the programme. The programme also aims to educate farmers on soil science principles for practices of sustainable soil management and aims to achieve this by providing them with a set of tools composed of some educational materials and a soil testing methods (STM) manual for preliminary soil analysis. The STM is a collection of locally relevant, and easy to use, soil analyses procedures that would be selected by each area where the program is implemented.
