No results found.The Eighth Session of the Scientific Committee of the Southwest Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) was held from 12 to 15 February 2018 at Hotel Tivoli, in Maputo, Mozambique. The Session was attended by delegates from Comoros, France (Réunion and Mayotte), Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, and the United Republic of Tanzania. Representatives of the Oceanographic Research Institute in South Africa (ORI), the IOC-SWIOFish1 project, the Television of Mozambique (TVM) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) attended the meeting as observers and external experts. The Committee reviewed the national reports on the status of fisheries and fisheries resources, on the management actions undertaken by member countries in the intersessional period and on the fishery research activities carried out or in planning. The national reports on fisheries management plans being implemented or planned, certification of fisheries, discards and by-catch and impact of climate events on fisheries and aquaculture were also presented and commented upon. The report of the Fifth Working Party on Fisheries Data and Statistics was also presented. The next session of the Scientific Committee of the SWIOFC will take place in Réunion, France, at least two months before the ninth session of the Commission. La huitième session du Comité scientifique de la Commission des Pêches du Sud-Ouest de l'Océan Indien (CPSOOI) s'est tenue du 12 au 15 février 2018 à l’Hotel Tivoli à Maputo, Mozambique. Des délégués de l’Afrique du Sud, Comores, France (Réunion et Mayotte), Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Maurice, Mozambique, République-Unie de Tanzanie, Seychelles et Somalie ont participé. Des représentants de l'Institut de Recherche Océanographique, Afrique du Sud (ORI), du projet COI-SWIOFish1, de la Télévision du Mozambique (TVM), et de l’Agence Suédoise pour Coopération pour le Développement International (ASDI), ont assisté à la réunion en qualité d'observateurs et experts externes. Le Comité a examiné les rapports nationaux sur l'état des ressources halieutiques et les mesures de gestion prises par les pays membres pendant la période d'intersession, ainsi que les activités de recherche halieutique menées ou prévues. Les rapports nationaux sur les plans de gestion des pêches mis en œuvre ou prévus, la certification des pêcheries, la question des rejets et des prises accessoires, et l'impact des événements climatiques sur la pêche et l'aquaculture ont aussi été présentés et commentés. Le rapport du cinquième Groupe de travail sur les statistiques de la pêche a été présentés. La prochaine session du Comité Scientifique de la CPSOOI aura lieu à Réunion, France, au moins deux mois avant la neuvième session de la Commission. -

No results found.This is the final version of the report of the eleventh session of the Scientific Committee of the South-West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission. It was prepared by the Secretariat of the SWIOFC, based on the information provided by the participants at the meeting. The 11th Session of the SC of the SWIOFC was dedicated to make an outline of the work on fisheries monitoring and management currently on-going at national level and in the region and on the identification of future work lines and roles. The meeting of the Scientific Committee is being convened under the Statutes of the Southwest Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission adopted under Resolution 1/127 of the Hundred and Twenty-seventh Session of the FAO Council. It is open to members of the Commission, coastal States with sovereignty over waters within the area of competence of the Commission and to observers.Ceci est la version finale du rapport de la onzième session du Comité scientifique de la Commission des pêches du sud-ouest de l’océan Indien. Il a été préparé par le Secrétariat du SWIOFC, sur la base des informations fournies par les participants à la réunion. La 11ème session du CS du SWIOFC a été consacrée à faire un aperçu du travail sur le suivi et la gestion des pêches actuellement en cours au niveau national et dans la région et sur l'identification des futures lignes de travail et des rôles. La réunion du Comité scientifique est convoquée conformément aux Statuts de la Commission des pêches du sud-ouest de l'océan Indien adoptés en vertu de la Résolution 1/127 de la cent vingt-septième session du Conseil de la FAO. Il est ouvert aux membres de la Commission, aux États côtiers ayant souveraineté sur les eaux dans la zone de compétence de la Commission et aux observateurs. -

The 10th Session of the Scientific Committee of the Southwest Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) was held from 31 May to 2 June 2021 via teleconference. The Session was attended by delegates from Comoros, France (Réunion and Mayotte), Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia and the United Republic of Tanzania. Representatives of the Nairobi Convention (NC) Secretariat, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) Secretariat, the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA) Secretariat, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), the EU EcoFish Programme, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) the IOC-SWIOFish1 and the Stop Illegal Fishing project attended the meeting as observers. The Scientific Committee has been created to support member states in providing scientific information including the case studies on recent assessments of fisheries resources for taking adequate management measures to ensure sustainability of the fisheries resources in our region. No results found.This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste. -

Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum
2023This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.
