Working together to reduce abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear
2024In 2021, the GFCM adopted Resolution GFCM/44/2021/14 on abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear, also known as ghost gear. Ghost gear transcends borders and poses environmental and economic risks, including navigational hazards, harm to marine life, and the introduction of non-indigenous species into the marine food web. This factsheet aims at promoting clarity by providing definitions, noting key regulatory aspects and providing context on the phenomenom. Properly addressing this topic will help mitigate wildlife entanglement, protect marine habitats, promote sustainable fisheries management, introduce economic benefits, reduce plastic pollution, and enhance navigation safety. -

2024The Committee on Fisheries (COFI) held its Thirty-sixth Session from 8 to 12 July 2024. The session was convened in hybrid modality. The session was webcast, and the recording would be made available in the webcast archive on the FAO internet site. The session was attended by 110 Members of the Committee, observers from 20 other FAO Members, the Holy See, by representatives from the United Nations and eight specialized agencies of the United Nations and by observers from 39 intergovernmental organizations, and 36 international non-governmental organizations. -

No results found.The 2023 annual meeting of the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) and the International Symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” was held from 13 to 17 February 2023 in Kochi, India. The symposium was hosted by FAO in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, organized by the Bay of Bengal Programme Intergovernmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Fisheries Institutes and State Fisheries Universities. The symposium brought together 325 participants comprising of scientists, researchers, officials, policymakers, diplomats, industry, entrepreneurs, and students from 32 countries both online and offline delivering a total of 137 presentations providing a platform for discussions on the challenges facing world fisheries including depleted fish stocks, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, fish loss and wastage bycatch, and ghost fishing. This report summarizes the symposium on “Innovations in Fishing Technologies for Sustainable and Resilient Fisheries” which comprised of eight thematic sessions: (i) active gears (ii) passive gears (iii)indicators (iv) abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) (v) survival/behaviour/physiology (vi) energy efficiency (vii) general topics and (viii) gear design.

No results found.This 2023 special edition of the GFCM’s flagship publication, The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, updates statistics and figures on the status and management of fisheries in the region and includes, for the first time, an overview of regional indicators on the aquaculture sector in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. It aims to deliver useful and reliable data to a wide audience as an essential source of information on fisheries and aquaculture in the region and a key tool to support decision-making and monitor progress towards the goals set by the GFCM. The fifth instalment of its series, this publication covers topics of regional importance in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors over the course of seven chapters. Fleet status and capture fisheries production are the focus of the first two chapters, which include figures on fishing capacity and landings by country and fleet segment. Chapter three captures the human dimension behind the region’s fisheries through socioeconomic data on revenue and employment. In chapter four, information on discards is updated and categorized for the main fishing fleets in each GFCM subregion, along with details on the species that make up this important component of the catch. Chapter five reviews the status of fisheries resources, especially regional trends and trends in priority species, while chapter seven summarizes relevant existing and new adopted measures towards the sustainability of key fisheries and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems. Aquaculture is included in this edition for the first time, described in terms of volume and socioeconomic indicators in chapter six. -

2025This report summarizes the discussions held during the forty-seventh session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean and fourteenth session of the Committee on Administration and Finance. During the session, progress on activities related to fisheries, aquaculture, compliance and other strategic activities was reviewed. The Commission adopted 12 binding recommendations and 5 resolutions related to fisheries management and conservation, aquaculture and compliance. Finally, the Commission adopted its programme of work for the next intersession and approved its autonomous budget for 2025, 2026 and 2027, as well as a number of strategic actions to be funded through extrabudgetary resources. The Commission also extended the mandate of its current Bureau for two additional years and endorsed the new Bureaus of the Compliance Committee and the Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries. -

Now in its fourth instalment, the publication updates the findings from previous editions while analysing emerging issues in the fisheries sector, including the effects of management plans. For the first time, thanks to the recent consolidation of data quality indicators, trends in the fisheries sector are also analysed at the regional level. Based on data and information from GFCM contracting parties and cooperating non-contracting parties, The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2022 delivers the most comprehensive picture of fisheries in the region to date. Against the backdrop of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and of renewed strategic commitments, the first two chapters present the characteristics of the Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries sector, with figures on the fleet and capture fisheries production; chapters three and six showcase the human dimension behind fisheries through socioeconomic data and specific insights on small-scale fisheries, given their relative importance; chapters four and five provide an overview of the status of commercial living resources and of vulnerable species; and chapter seven outlines the measures taken and remaining challenges towards building a sustainable future for fisheries at the subregional and regional levels.
