DocumentNational Consultation Report "Analysis of existing management plans for coherence with an Ecosystem Approach to fisheries (EAF) and sharing of best practices from fisheries management plan implementation"
The Gambia

No results found. This report presents the findings of case studies of co-management plans for Solefish fishery and Cockle and Oyster fishery. The two plans were adopted and gazetted by the Government of Gambia in 2013. The Small Pelagics (Bonga) management plan does not exist, but it is being planned for development and implementation. The evaluation of the bonga management plan was based on the Fisheries and Aquaculture Strategic Plan (2018), the Fisheries Act (2007) and the Fisheries Regulations (2008) among other management instruments. The three case studies were intended to evaluate how compliant the plans are with principles of Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) management, identify factors that enabled or challenged the planning, development and implementation of Ecosystem-based management system and collate lessons learned and good practices to inform future actions that may be undertaken to move the current fisheries management system towards EAF compliance. The selected fisheries transverse marine and estuary ecosystems of the Gambia, representing the demersals, small pelagics and bivalves. Each of these fisheries assumes a specific role in the fishing industry of the Gambia, basically, sole is mostly an element of subregional and international trade while small pelagics is the main contributor to livelihood and food security, the cockle and oyster plan demonstrate the effects of mainstreaming gender in fisheries operations. -
Book (stand-alone)Fisheries management. 2. The ecosystem approach to fisheries. 2.1 Best practices in ecosystem modelling for informing an ecosystem approach to fisheries 2008These guidelines were produced as an addition to the FAO Technical Guidelines for Responsible Fisheries No. 4, Suppl. 2 entitled Fisheries management. The ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). Applying EAF in management requires the application of scientific methods and tools that go beyond the single-species approaches that have been the main sources of scientific advice. These guidelines have been developed to assist users in the construction and application of ecosystem models for informing an EAF. It addresses all steps of the modelling process, encompassing scoping and specifying the model, implementation, evaluation and advice on how to present and use the outputs. The overall goal of the guidelines is to assist in ensuring that the best possible information and advice is generated from ecosystem models and used wisely in management.
