No results found.African Swine Fever continues to spread within East and Southeast Asia, leading to the death and the culling of millions of pigs. The disease poses a serious threat to the livelihood and food security of large numbers of people relying on the production and processing of pigs. Pig meat accounts for almost half of the meat quantity produced in the subregion and is a key source of animal protein and income. The disease is having a significant impact on global markets, with prices of pig meat rising rapidly between February and May 2019. -

No results found.Through a strategic partnership with the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has implemented a comprehensive multi-country initiative to strengthen animal health systems and reduce biothreats posed by devastating transboundary animal diseases (TADs). This project addresses the growing threat of TADs and zoonoses by investing in national capacities to detect, prevent, and respond to biological threats at source across Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia.The initiative focuses on three priority diseases: African swine fever (ASF), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), and peste des petits ruminants (PPR), which collectively cause billions of dollars in annual losses and threaten the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Key interventions include supporting risk-based surveillance, enhancing laboratory diagnostics, and training frontline veterinary professionals in field epidemiology. -

The Consultation was held in four sessions at FAO headquarters, Rome, from 23–27 June 2008, 26–30 January 2009, 4–8 May 2009 and 24–28 August 2009. The Consulation was convened by the Director General of the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations upon the recommendation of the twentyse venth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries. The Technical Consultation finalized the draft Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing on 28 August 2009. The Consultation was funded by the Governments of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and United States of America.

The aim of the Consultation was to review the draft International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas which had been developed at the request of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Committee on Fisheries at its twenty-seventh ses sion (March 2007) in order to assist States and regional fisheries management organizations and arrangements in sustainably managing deep-sea fisheries and in implementing the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 61/105 chapter 10, concerning responsible fisheries in the marine ecosystem. This document contains the report of the Technical Consultation as well as the International Guidelines as adopted by the meeting.
