Synopsis (short abstract) This five-lesson course provides guidance on how to assess existing legal and policy frameworks for fisheries in a specific country, explains how to legislate for smallscale fisheries, and outlines the main components of small-scale fisheries-specific legislation. It aims at helping professionals engaged in dialogue on policy and legislation processes and actions at all levels relating to small-scale fisheries, as well as at academic institutions and members of the general public interested in the subject.

    This diagnostic tool advances the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) through policy and legal frameworks. It is a key tool for use by any actor, including small-scale fishers, who is interested in contributing to the SSF Guidelines operationalization at the national level. By using this tool, users are able to recognize the national policy and legal instruments that are relevant to small-scale fisheries in a country, consistent with the SSF Guidelines. Users are also able to: assess policy coherence for SSF; assess the alignment of national fisheries policy and legal instruments with the SSF Guidelines; identify gaps and strengths in these instruments; and further propose recommendations for improving the existing national policy and legal framework according with the SSF Guidelines.

    This course is aimed at mid-level managers responsible for developing and implementing policy on small-scale fisheries. This course aims to contribute towards creating an enabling environment for implementing the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Securing sustainable Small-scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines) in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, by strengthening the capacity of government officials and fisheries practitioners at local, national and regional levels, and promoting the development of good governance frameworks.

    Stepping up resilient and sustainable small-scale fisheries and aquaculture: Policy considerations to sustain the achievements from the IYAFA 2022 celebration in the Western Central Atlantic 2024

    The theme for the IYAFA celebration in WECAFC was ‘Resilience and Recovery,’ with a specific focus on gender and youth. The selection of Resilience and Recovery was significant for this region as it took place during the world’s recovery from the global COVID-19 pandemic. Small-scale fishers and fish farmers across the region were severely affected by the pandemic, impacting their social and economic well-being. Therefore, the chosen themes reflected a regional effort to support the recovery of small- scale fishers and fish farmers by leveraging their collective efforts. The inclusion of gender and youth as cross-cutting themes also recognized the vital roles these groups play in ensuring the sustainability of the region’s fisheries. These main themes were further supported by three subthemes: social resilience, innovation, and intersectoral linkages.
