    Durant la troisième décade de février 2014, les estimations de FEWS-NET indiquaient que la pluviosité a été supérieure à 40 mm dans quasiment toute la Grande-Île (figure 1). La pluviosité était donc excédentaire à hyper-excédentaire par rapport aux besoins du Criquet migrateur malgache dans l’Aire grégarigène : 78,5 mm à Manja, 84,1 mm à Tranoroa, 82,5 mm à Amboasary et 116,2 mm à Beloha. (annexe 1) Le taux de verdissement des strates herbeuses était de l’ordre de 100 % dans toute la Grande-Île. La hauteur moyenne de la végétation variait de 10 à 60 cm selon les localités et les espèces.

    Selon Fews-net, la 1ère décade de février 2016 semble avoir été marquée par une forte pluviosité (souvent supérieure à 125 mm) dans toute la Grande-Île. Les relevés du Centre national antiacridien (CNA) indiquaient que la pluviosité était excédentaire par rapport aux besoins du Criquet migrateur malgache solitaire dans l’Aire grégarigène sauf dans l’Aire transitoire de multiplication Sud et dans l’Aire de densation Centre et Sud, où elle était favorable. Les températures minimales et maximales m oyennes restaient toujours favorables au développement et à la reproduction du Locusta migratoria capito dans toute la Grande-Île.

    The 2023 edition of the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an update of the data and trends in food security and nutrition in recent years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic slowdown, rising food inflation and income inequality have had an impact on regional figures. The most recent data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, progress was made in reducing hunger and food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the progress achieved is far from the targets established to meet SDG 2 of ending hunger. In addition, one in five people in the region cannot access a healthy diet and malnutrition in all its forms, including child stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity continue to be a major challenge.

    Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum

    This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.
