2008El estado mundial de la agricultura y la alimentación 2008 analiza las consecuencias del rápido crecimiento de la producción de biocombustibles derivados de productos básicos agrícolas. La expansión de los biocombustibles líquidos ha sido provocada en gran parte por las políticas de los países desarrollados, basadas en una previsión positiva de los efectos de sus esfuerzos orientados a la mitigación del cambio climático, la seguridad energética y el desarrollo agrícola. La creciente demanda de productos básicos agrícolas para la producción de biocombustibles está teniendo importantes repercusiones en los mercados agrícolas, mientras que aumentan las preocupaciones acerca del efecto negativo para la seguridad alimentaria de millones de personas en todo el mundo. Al mismo tiempo, las consecuencias medioambientales de los biocombustibles están siendo sometidas a estudios más detallados. No obstante, los biocombustibles también ofrecen oportunidades para el desarrollo agrícola y rural, s i se aplican las políticas e inversiones adecuadas. El presente informe analiza la situación actual del debate y los datos disponibles sobre estas cuestiones primordiales. El informe sostiene que serán necesarios esfuerzos conjuntos para reformar las políticas y la inversión en agricultura si se pretende reducir los riesgos asociados a los biocombustibles y compartir de forma más generalizada las oportunidades. -

2009El sector pecuario se está transformando a gran velocidad como respuesta a los cambios que se producen en la economía mundial y en las expectativas de la sociedad. La sociedad espera que el sector pecuario proporcione alimentos y fibra sanos y abundantes para las poblaciones urbanas en crecimiento, medios de vida para más de mil millones de productores pobres y comerciantes, así como bienes públicos mundiales relacionados con la seguridad alimentaria, la sostenibilidad ambiental y las enfermedades transmitidas por animales. Sin embargo, la velocidad a la que se producen los cambios ha llevado al crecimiento desequilibrado del sector. Ello se ha traducido en una ampliación de la dicotomía dentro del sector en términos de escala, intensidad y eficacia de la producción, así como en otras implicaciones imprevistas de tipo social, nutricional, medioambiental y relacionadas con la sanidad animal. Estos cambios y la velocidad con la que se producen han provoc ado riesgos sistémicos para los medios de vida, la salud humana y animal y el medio ambiente. Para hacer frente a los desafíos y las dificultades que presenta el siglo XXI, el sector pecuario necesita instituciones adecuadas, investigación, intervenciones de desarrollo y una gobernanza que reflejen la diversidad dentro del sector y las múltiples demandas que se le plantean. -

No results found.The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture presents the first global assessment of biodiversity for food and agriculture worldwide. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. It concludes with a discussion of needs and challenges in the future management of biodiversity for food and agriculture. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture. -

2020FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources in 1948. At that time, its major objective was to collect information on available timber supply to satisfy post-war reconstruction demand. Since then, the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) has evolved into a comprehensive evaluation of forest resources and their condition, management and uses, covering all the thematic elements of sustainable forest management. This, the latest of these assessments, examines the status of, and trends in, forest resources over the period 1990–2020, drawing on the efforts of hundreds of experts worldwide. The production of FRA 2020 also involved collaboration among many partner organizations, thereby reducing the reporting burden on countries, increasing synergies among reporting processes, and improving data consistency. The results of FRA 2020 are available in several formats, including this report and an online database containing the original inputs of countries and territories as well as desk studies and regional and global analyses prepared by FAO. I invite you to use these materials to support our common journey towards a more sustainable future with forests. -
