Synopsis (short abstract) Food security professionals increasing realize that they must use communications strategically for their work to have a maximum impact. While most organizations have invested heavily in food security analysis and research, many still need to enhance their communications to ensure their findings reach their intended users and action is taken. This toolkit is geared to helping food security professionals develop a communication strategy and communicate more effectively with their target audiences. Specific sections of the toolkit focus on policy makers and the media, because of the important role they play in implementing and influencing food security policies. The toolkit also looks at specific information products such as policy briefs, reports and early warning bulletins, and suggests ways to structure and improve them. A section on writing effectively, which focuses on grammar and style, makes sure that written documents are easy to read. Finally, the toolkit gives tips for using the internet, social media and Web 2.0 tools as these technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for engaging in two way dialogues with global audiences. The toolkit also includes readymade templates and dozens of tips and tricks distilled from many years of experience. While aimed at professionals working in food security related fields, the lessons in this toolkit can easily be applied to many other fields.

    The importance of good statistical data and its analysis in the national development of countries is seldom appreciated. In order to make progress in alleviating poverty, benchmarks to measure progress need to be established. This is especially true of the Pacific countries where a clear definition of poverty and its scope in the region is still lacking. National capacities in data collection and statistical analysis need to be strengthened to provide decision-makers with accurate information. T his workshop, held in Nadi, Fiji from 10 to 13 November 2003, focused on ways to measure food security and poverty in the Pacific and, specifically, to assist countries in formulating and utilizing a food and agricultural statistics system in the framework of an integrated system of agricultural statistics.

    FAO Strategic Priorities for Food Safety within the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 2023

    Elaborated at the request of the 27th Session of the Committee on Agriculture, the FAO Strategic Priorities for Food Safety within the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 were endorsed by the FAO Council in December 2022. These Strategic Priorities are articulated around four interconnected Strategic Outcomes focused on governance, scientific advice, strengthening national food control systems and fostering public–private partnerships along the food chain. They result from an iterative consultative process led by FAO with its Members and international partner organizations, including, notably WHO. The FAO Strategic Priorities for Food Safety 2022–2031 encourage a more consistent integration of food safety into the development of sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems, food security and nutrition policies, and agriculture development strategies. FAO expects the Strategic Priorities for Food Safety to act as an instrument that will spur investments to strengthen food safety, to enhance effective participation in food safety standards-setting and to secure adequate human and financial resources for FAO to successfully implement its food safety programme and to provide international guidance, policy and advocacy for policymakers.
