The sixth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) was held in Tirana, Albania, from 17 to 19 December 2008. The session was attended by delegates from eleven Members of the Commission and by the observer from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Committee reviewed the status and trends of the Mediterranean aquaculture as well as the intersessional activities undertaken also by its Working Groups respect ively on Marketing of Aquaculture (WGMA), on Siting and Carrying Capacity (WGSC), on Aquaculture Sustainability (WGSA), as well as the progress achieved in relation to the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean Countries (SIPAM). The CAQ discussed on the main problems faced by the Mediterranean aquaculture market and agreed on the need to harmonize and to implement the procedures for site selection and site management of Mediterranean aquaculture, for Environmen tal Impact Assessment and Environmental Monitoring Programmes (EMP). The Committee confirmed that the sustainability of aquaculture depends on four key dimensions being the economic, social, environmental and governance dimension. The CAQ noted that identification of sustainable aquaculture indicators and reference points should be understandable for all stakeholders and easily quantifiable. It formulated aquaculture management advice aimed to establish a regional data collection scheme for aqua culture data and information and agreed on the preliminary set of data to be collected. It agreed upon its workplan for 2009.

The FAO-ICARDA International Technical Cooperation Network on Cactus (CactusNet) was established in 1993 to support the promotion of this underutilized crop. The first edition of this book "Agro-ecology, cultivation and uses of cactus pear", was published in 1995. During the last 20 years much knowledge on cactus pear has been generated, and this is refelcted in this extensively revised edition in 2017. This edition contains completely updated information on the state of the art of Opuntia so. in the world. Due to climate change and extreme weather conditions felt around the world, specifically in arid and semi-arid countries that are experiencing prolonged drought situation, the interest on the crop for human consumption as well as animal fodder is increasing. Improving governance of pastoral lands
Implementing the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security
    2016
The Technical Guide on Pastoralism builds on a number of initiatives and studies from recent years that have shone a light on pastoral governance and land tenure: on the inherent challenges pastoralists face, the shortcomings of governments in securing pastoral tenure, and the emerging examples of success and progress from around the world. This Technical Guide provides solutions to securing pastoral governance and tenure without undermining the inherent, necessary complexity of customary arrang ements. The solutions are within a rapidly changing context, in which traditional practices and crucial patterns of livestock mobility are transforming. The technical guide on Improving the governance of pastoral lands is designed for several audiences including government and non-government actors. While most readers will have a basic knowledge of pastoralism, many will be unfamiliar with the great diversity of pastoralist systems and cultures throughout the world. The guide address es those who recognize the importance of securing pastoral land tenure and who are looking for practical guidance on how to proceed. The guide is, therefore, not an advocacy document, but it provides arguments in Section 1 for securing pastoral tenure that can be used by different actors to strengthen their justification for such work. While these guidelines provide practical advice that can be operationalized, further work will be required to translate the current document into more local user- friendly products for pastoral communities.
