Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetEggs: harnessing their power for the fight against hunger and malnutrition
FSN Forum Report of Activity No. 154
2019This document summarizes the online discussion Eggs: harnessing their power for the fight against hunger and malnutrition, held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 23 October to 13 November 2018. The discussion was facilitated by Saul Morris from the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Tim Lambert from the International Egg Commission. It aimed to explore the role that eggs can play in effectively tackling malnutrition by looking at the following questions: - What are the best production mechanisms? - How can egg consumption be encouraged in a sustainable way? - How can the interests of better nutrition be balanced with concerns about smallholder livelihoods? The discussion also introduced a special supplement titled “Eggs: A High-Potential Food for Improving Maternal and Child Nutrition” (published in the journal Maternal and Child Nutrition) which summarizes a wealth of additional information on the value of eggs and feasible ways of increasing access. -

The European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition, established in 2016, has been and will continue to be instrumental in connecting Members of the European Parliament and in enabling them to engage actively in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. The Alliance provides a platform for policy dialogue and awareness-raising on the right to adequate food for all; on the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and on making agriculture more sustainable and resilient. FAO, which acts as Secretariat of the Alliance, will support its future activities and will work tirelessly with the European Parliamentarians and other partners on making sure the world has enough good and nutritious food. This brochure describes the activities of the Alliance in Brussels and beyond and is being used to engage, inform and attract more Parliamentarians to join the Alliance. -
BookletParliamentary alliances against hunger and malnutrition
First Global Parliamentary Summit. Madrid, October 2018
2018For the third year in a row, hunger is on the rise again and affects 821 million people in the world. In addition, one third of the global population suffers from malnutrition. Eradicating hunger and malnutrition by 2030 requires strategies, public policies, national laws and programs that guarantee the right to adequate food for everyone, contribute to reducing poverty and improve people’s diets according to each country’s specific context. This publication presents the structural causes of hunger and malnutrition and introduces FAO’s framework of action to achieve a solid political commitment and design long-term legal strategies to achieve Zero Hunger. With successful legislative examples, including constitutional amendments, school feeding laws and family agriculture programmes, the publication shows how parliamentary alliances play a key role in consolidating food and nutritional security.
