Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetCreating alternatives to migration and reintegrating migrants in rural areas 2023
Also available in:
No results found. While many people, especially youth, leave rural areas in search of better opportunities, returning migrants struggle to reintegrate in rural communities. Creating alternatives to migration and reintegrating migrants in rural areas is one of the priorities of FAO’s work on rural migration. It aims to help people find decent jobs in rural areas or kick start their agro-enterprises and make migration a choice not a necessity. The leaflet is part of a brochure that presents FAO’s work on rural migration and each priority for action. The leaflet includes a description of what FAO does, with whom and why, presenting tangible results and stories from the field. -
ProjectBoosting Decent Employment and Self-Employment Opportunities in Agriculture and Agribusiness for Youth in Africa - GCP/INT/920/MUL 2024
Also available in:
Africa has the world’s youngest population, with more than 600 million people under the age of 24 and more than 750 million under the age of 35. The growing youth population is challenging Africa’s ability to meet the demand for jobs, which has pushed many to migrate out of rural areas and across borders. The agricultural sector in Africa can play a key role in solving the youth employment challenge that threatens stability and growth in many countries across the continent. Against this background, in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) developed the comprehensive Opportunities for Youth in Africa (OYA) joint programme, in response to a dedicated call for accelerating efforts on job creation for African youth, especially through agribusiness and entrepreneurship development. This OYA project was implemented in six pilot countries: Cabo Verde, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Tunisia, and Zambia. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetMatching grant programmes: An effective approach to channel remittances into sustainable investment in agribusiness?
FSN Forum report of activity, No. 177
2023This document summarizes the online consultation “Matching grant programmes: An effective approach to channel remittances into sustainable investment in agribusiness?” held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 18 February to 15 May 2022. This consultation was organized in the context of FAO’s work on supporting countries in developing evidence-based policies and programmes to support migrants and returnees, and their families, in investing remittances in agribusiness – one example being the pilot project “Promoting Inclusive Economic Growth through Matching Grants”, conducted by ESA in Tajikistan. The consultation’s aim was to help further refine the design of such policies and programmes by gathering input from a wide range of stakeholders on the potential of matching grant programmes (MGPs) to stimulate the investment of remittances in the agricultural sector.
