Enhancing Sustainable Management of Fall Armyworm in Africa, the Near East, Asia and the Pacific - GCP/INT/928/MUL - FMM/GLO/154/MUL 2024
    Also available in:

Fall armyworm (FAW) is an insect pest that feeds on maize and more than 80 other crops. As the pest is able to feed on various kinds of food, it is likely to continue to feed on important crops and spread, threatening the cereal production systems, as well as the food security, food safety and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people. Unlike quarantine pests under official control or insects with gregarious behaviour, FAW does not lend itself to official, centralized control. Another major problem associated with FAW infestation is the increased use of hazardous pesticides, which some erroneously think are an immediate, available solution for farmers; however, they are not effective and indeed are harmful to humans, animals, aquatic life and environmental health. The pest cannot be eradicated but it can be controlled through an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. The objective of this project was to support the coordination of the FAW response in Africa, the Near East, Asia and the Pacific to enable farmers to sustainably manage FAW.

FAO and many development and resource partners have joined forces to coordinate a response to the new threat of the Fall Armyworm in Africa. The coordinated work will take place at many levels, from that of the smallholder farmer, to that of national level authorities who make vital policy and programme decisions. The Framework for Partnership for the Sustainable Management of Fall Armyworm in Africa is divided into seven components: 1.Management of FAW: Immediate Recommendations & Actions 2.Sho rt-term Research Priorities 3.Medium to Long-term Research 4.Communications & Training 5.Surveillance & Early Warning 6.Policy & Regulatory Support 7.Coordination

This document outlines the general principles that should be understood and followed by food business operators at all stages of the food chain and that provide a basis for competent authorities to oversee food safety and suitability. This edition contains a new annex which introduces tools to determine the critical control points in a hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system. The term "Codex Alimentarius" is Latin and means "food code”. Codex standards are international food texts, i.e. standards, codes of practice, codes of hygienic practice, guidelines and other recommendations, established to protect the health of the consumers and to ensure fair practices in the food trade. The collection of food standards and related texts adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission is known as the Codex Alimentarius.

A resource guide to method selection and application in low resource settings

FAO provides countries with technical support to conduct nutrition assessments, in particular to build the evidence base required for countries to achieve commitments made at the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) and under the 2016-2025 UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Such concrete evidence can only derive from precise and valid measures of what people eat and drink. There is a wide range of dietary assessment methods available to measure food and nutrient intakes (expressed as energy insufficiency, diet quality and food patterns etc.) in diet and nutrition surveys, in impact surveys, and in monitoring and evaluation. Differenct indicators can be selected according to a study's objectives, sample population, costs and required precision. In low capacity settings, a number of other issues should be considered (e.g. availability of food composition tables, cultural and community specific issues, such as intra-household distribution of foods and eating from shared plates, etc.). This manual aims to signpost for the users the best way to measure food and nutrient intakes and to enhance their understanding of the key features, strengths and limitations of various methods. It also highlights a number of common methodological considerations involved in the selection process. Target audience comprises of individuals (policy-makers, programme managers, educators, health professionals including dietitians and nutritionists, field workers and researchers) involved in national surveys, programme planning and monitoring and evaluation in low capacity settings, as well as those in charge of knowledge brokering for policy-making.
