Book (stand-alone)Technical bookMethodological recommendations to better evaluate the effects of farmer field schools mobilized to support agroecological transitions 2022The farmer field school (FFS) approach, based on group experimentation of innovative practices and/or farming systems, is in line with participatory farm advisory efforts. This approach has an ambitious goal: strengthening farmers’ skills so that they can adapt their practices, or even invent new ones, and move towards more agroecological farming systems. Assessing such an advisory intervention poses significant challenges. The purpose of this document is to propose fresh ways to update FFS assessment methods, notably the study of changes in farming practices and the detailed analysis of FFS outcomes. Project designers, managers, and evaluators are the target audience for this document, which may also interest teachers, researchers, students, and policymakers. The elements of the FFS assessment methodology presented here stem from the collaboration between three institutions, CIRAD, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), and the NGO AVSF (Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders), and fieldwork carried out in cotton-growing areas of Burkina Faso and Togo between 2018 and 2019. This document is divided into four parts. We first define FSS and the principles of the approach, then we detail the methods commonly used to assess FSS and the challenges involved. We then present a comprehensive assessment method using a case study in northern Togo. The final part of the report provides a basis for placing the proposed method within the process of designing an assessment for a project involving FSS.

2022The key to implementing farmer field schools (FFS) is to trigger an experimentation process based on collaboration between a group of farmers and a facilitator. The purpose of this document is to provide project managers, technicians and designers with practical information on how to use the FFS approach and adapt it to their context of intervention to support the agroecological transition (AET). It also will be useful for research staff, leaders of farmers' organizations (FOs), teachers and students interested in using the FFS approach or better understand its benefits. The findings and recommendations proposed in this document are the result of a partnership between three institutions working to support AET in the Global South: CIRAD, FAO and the NGO AVSF (Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders). This document has four parts: - Definition of the FFS approach and its principles, and characterization of the advantages of this approach to supporting family farm AET in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. - Presentation of several important points for a successful FFS, i.e. to strengthen farmers' skills to practically and collectively solve the problems they encounter. This second part is aimed specifically at development project managers and field technicians and facilitators. - Recommendations for project designers and managers for including FFS in development projects. - Proposal of ways in which FSS could evolve to better take into account the needs of farmers and other actors engaged in AET. -

No results found.This book tells stories. Stories from very many people. Stories of change – triggered by this complex project, Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems (CDAIS). The stories relate to changes. Personal change. Organizational change. Changes in attitudes. Changes in practice. They tell of improvements in livelihoods. But more importantly, they tell of positive and appreciated changes in individual and organizational approaches – in how people see things and do things. They give some examples of the rich learning experiences stimulated by the CDAIS project, but of course don’t show them all. Also, each is only a ‘snapshot’ – having been written and published on www. cdais.net at different times over the past 12 months, though some have been updated, others show where people were at that point in time. But they all show how competence – but perhaps more importantly – confidence – amongst those involved has changed. Though the main aim of the CDAIS project was to test how and in what ways the approach used worked (or didn’t work), how it could be improved, and in what ways the results could help donors when deciding on the design of future projects. But this is not the purpose of this book. Other publications will explain that in detail. This book just tells stories, with images and testimonies from the field. The ‘end users’, ‘beneficiaries’ or whatever other impersonal terms some in ‘development’ want to call them – the people – here, they air their views. In context. Honestly. Frankly. And, as it seems, positively. But this would not have been possible without the great efforts of very many people. First and foremost are the 40 contributors we have supported – almost all ‘national innovation facilitators’ trained by CDAIS to implement innovation in agricultural systems, to collect these stories. And we are so very proud of their achievements, and the help provided by many others within Agrinatura, national partner organisations, and others in the partnerships concerned. And even after working in rural development for 30 years, some of these experiences have moved us deeply. We are seeing real change. Of that there is no doubt. “Other projects bring us machines, but CDAIS brings us knowledge and a new way of working together” was a common thread to many of the conversations. “And thanks to that it has helped us so much. Thank you.” I visited six of the eight pilot countries during the preparation of this work, so can vouch personally, for many of the testimonies. And as for seeing the faces of those as they spoke the words that are included in the book, the photographs can’t do them justice. I saw the impacts. And now you can seen them too. Enjoy! 2020Ce guide du processus de coaching a été préparé dans le cadre du projet Développement des capacités pour les systèmes d'innovation agricole (CDAIS), un partenariat mondial (Agrinatura, FAO et huit pays pilotes) qui vise à renforcer la capacité des pays et des principales parties prenantes à innover dans des systèmes agricoles complexes, ce qui permet l'amélioration des moyens de subsistance en milieu rural. Le CDAIS utilise une approche de cycle d'apprentissage continu pour soutenir les systèmes nationaux d'innovation agricole dans huit pays d'Afrique, d'Asie et d'Amérique centrale. Le CDAIS rassemble des partenaires et des acteurs clés pour répondre aux défis et opportunités identifiés dans des régions spécifiques ou au sein de chaînes de valeur particulières. Les chaînes de valeur / partenariats d'innovation identifiés sont soutenus par des facilitateurs nationaux de l'innovation (FNI) formés à travers un processus de coaching. Ce guide sert de ressource pour eux et pour les autres parties prenantes du projet, ainsi que pour d'autres experts du développement des capacités pour i) soutenir les partenariats de niche d'innovation agricole dans la mise en œuvre de leurs plans d'action conçus en fonction de la compréhension des besoins de l'acteur (CNA), ii) réfléchir aux réalisations et aux changements et, ii) ajuster les plans en conséquence. -
