    The FAO Yearbook of fishery and aquaculture statistics is a compilation of statistical data on capture fisheries and aquaculture production, employment, commodities production and trade, apparent fish consumption and fishing fleets. It is structured into a booklet (containing summary tables, notes on major trends, concepts, classifications and a map of FAO major fishing areas), and a set of additional statistical tables available online. L’Annuaire des statistiques des pêches et de l’aquaculture de la FAO est une compilation de données statistiques sur les captures, la production de l’aquaculture, l’emploi, la production et le commerce des produits halieutiques, les bilans alimentaires et les flottes. L’Annuaire est composé d’un fascicule (contenant des tableaux résumés, des notes sur les tendances principales, une description des concepts et des classements, ainsi qu’une carte des principales zones de pêche de la FAO) et des tableaux statistiques supplémentaires disponibles en ligne. El Anuario de estadísticas de pesca y acuicultura de la FAO es una compilación de datos estadísticos sobre las capturas, la producción de acuicultura, el empleo, la producción y el comercio de los productos pesqueros, las hojas de balance de alimentos y las flotas. El Anuario se compone de un cuadernillo (con cuadros resúmenes, notas sobre las tendencias principales, conceptos básicos y clasificaciones, así como un mapa de las principales zonas de pesca de la FAO) y de un conjunto de cuadros estadísticos adicionales disponibles en línea.

    This Regional Plan of Action to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated IUU Fishing (RPOA-IUU) has been developed by the joint Regional Working Group on IUU fishing (RWG-IUU) of WECAFC which includes two sub-regional organizations, the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Organization for Fisheries and Aquaculture of Central America (OSPESCA), and was presented at the 17th Session of WECAFC in July 2019 for review, endorsement and implementation at national and regional levels. Le présent Plan d’action régional visant à prévenir, à contrecarrer et à éliminer la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée (PAR-INDNR) a été élaboré par le Groupe de travail régional conjoint sur la pêche INDNR (GTR-INDNR) de la COPACO qui comprend deux organisations sous-régionales, le Mécanisme régional des pêches des Caraïbes (CRFM) et l’Organisation du secteur des pêches et de l’aquaculture de l’isthme centraméricain (OSPESCA), et a été présenté à la dix-septième session de la COPACO en juillet 2019 pour examen, approbation et mise en œuvre aux niveaux national et régional. Este Plan de acción regional para prevenir, desalentar y eliminar la pesca ilegal, no declarada y no reglamentada (INDNR) (PAR-INDNR) fue elaborado por el Grupo de trabajo regional conjunto sobre pesca ilegal, no declarada y no reglamentada (GTR-INDNR) de la COPACO −que incluye dos organizaciones subregionales, el Mecanismo Regional de Pesca del Caribe (CRFM) y la Organización del Sector Pesquero y Acuícola del Istmo Centroamericano (OSPESCA) y se presentó en la 17.ª reunión de la COPACO, en julio de 2019, para examen, aprobación y aplicación nacional y regional.

    The Seventeenth Session of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission was held in Miami, United States of America (USA), from 15 to 18 July 2019. The session was attended by 25 members of the Commission. Observers from 20 partner organizations also participated. The Commission adopted seven regional fisheries management recommendations. La dix-septième session de la Commission des pêches pour l’Atlantique Centre-Ouest s’est tenue à Miami (États-Unis d’Amérique) (USA), du 15 au 18 juillet 2019. 25 membres de la Commission y ont participé. Des observateurs issus de 20 organisations partenaires étaient également présents. La Commission a adopté sept recommandations sur la gestion régionale des pêches. La 17.ª reunión de la Comisión de Pesca para el Atlántico Centro- Occidental se celebró en Miami, Estados Unidos de América (EE.UU.), del 15 al 18 de julio de 2019. Asistieron a la reunión 25 miembros de la Comisión. También participaron observadores de 20 organizaciones asociadas. La Comisión aprobó siete recomendaciones de gestión pesquera regional.

    Repurposing food and agricultural policies to make healthy diets more affordable

    This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.

    This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.

    The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
    Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum

    This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.
