No results found.The Serbian sugar sector is located entirely within the Vojvodina province in the north of the country. Overall sugar production capacity in Serbia and Montenegro (“Serbia”) is around 400,000 tonnes per annum, with domestic consumption at around 240,000 tonnes per annum. Sugar production has fluctuated in recent years between 200-275,000 tonnes. Seven factories operated during the 2003/04 season, with eight expected to be in operation for the 2004/05 season. All eight of these factories have bee n privatised since 2002. Four are owned by the Serbian company MK Commerce, two by the Italian company SFIR, and two by Hellenic Sugar of Greece. -

No results found.Agriculture plays an important role in the Russian Federation and in particular in the Southern Federal Okrug. This region has tremendous comparative advantages in agricultural production, with some of the world’s best and most expensive land for arable farming and long agricultural traditions. However, agriculture in this area on faces important challenges and productivity remains low compared to most developed economies. The reform process in the agricultural sector is not yet completed. Agrib usiness value chains have suffered as finance is difficult to access. The investment climate in rural areas is not business-friendly, quality of infrastructure is poor, and conventional market institutions are not developed. An analysis of agribusiness constraints and investment opportunities in Russia is presented in this publication by the FAO Investment Centre/European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Cooperation Programme. It appears in its FAO/EBRD report series which fea tures sector reviews and studies undertaken on development issues and innovative areas for investment in emerging market countries in Europe and the CIS region. It was prepared in close collaboration with experts within the Government and private sector of the Russian Federation. -

No results found.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOREWORD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This publication contains the proceedings of the International Sugar Conference held in Fiji from 29 to 31 October 1997. The Conference was jointly organised by the Government of Fiji and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The Conference addressed "Policy issues for Asia a nd the Pacific in the Next Round of Mulitlateral Negotiations." The theoretical outlook, framework and analysis, and background documentation to these issues were prepared by the Sugar and Beverage Group of the Raw Materials, Tropical and Horticultural Products Service, Commodities and Trade Division, FAO. These were published as Conference papers, covering a range of issues and included country studies for the major regional producers and consumers; the quantitative outlook to 2005; the impact of trade liberalisation on the world sugar market; and a discussion on the nurtitional aspects of sugar. Papers were also prepared and presented by internationally renowned speakers from the world sugar trade (Tote and Lyle - Australia; Sparks - United States; Siel Limited - India); grower and miller organizations (the Philippine Sugar Millers Association; the Thai Roong Ruang Group and the Australian Sugar Milling Council); government institutions (USDA and the Queensland Sugar Corporatio n) and other international organizations (World Bank and International Sugar Organization). The keynote addresses were given by the Honourable Mr Militoni Leweniqila, the Fiji Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and ALTA, and Mr J.N. Greenfield, the Director of the Commodities and Trade Division, who also summed up the proceedings.

2006This report aims to assess the full impact of the livestock sector on environmental problems, along with potential technical and policy approaches to mitigation. The assessment is based on the most recent and complete data available, taking into account direct impacts, along with the impacts of feedcrop agriculture required for livestock production. The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air poullution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. -

Moving forward on food loss and waste reduction
2019The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.
