Promoting gender equality across the policy and programme framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is crucial for the Organization to realize its mandate to eradicate poverty and eliminate hunger and malnutrition. Across the Asia-Pacific region, women are well recognized as important contributors to food production and all other aspects of food systems. However, their lives and livelihoods are being affected in unprecedented ways by persistent social and gender inequalities, climate change and the current COVID-19 pandemic. The Regional Gender Strategy and Action Plan 2022–2025 for Asia and the Pacific translates FAO’s corporate Policy on Gender Equality 2020-2030 and gender action plan into an actionable agenda and presents the strategic and programme framework for FAO’s gender-related work in the region. The main objectives of the Regional Gender Strategy and Action Plan are to: i) identify and respond to regional trends and challenges that affect women’s equal and meaningful participation in the sectors of agriculture, forestry, livestock and fisheries; ii) mainstream gender perspectives in the regional priorities; iii) establish regional focus areas that will enable gender equality and women’s empowerment across agriculture, forestry, livestock, aquaculture and fisheries sectors; and iv) respond to new and emerging challenges and needs to build back gender-sensitive and -resilient lives and livelihoods. The strategy and action plan includes the two-year action plan for the region and the action and outreach plan which shows how FAO intends to reach out to different stakeholders and partners through various activities.

The School food and nutrition - Global action plan seeks to consolidate and guide FAO’s synergistic efforts, setting out priority and concrete outputs to be achieved by 2026. Key activities are presented in the plan and organized according to the following action areas: 1. promote the uptake of and investment in holistic approaches to school food and nutrition (SFN); 2. enhance capacities to design, implement and monitor effective SFN interventions; 3. strengthen policy and legal frameworks that enable SFN implementation; and 4. mobilize resources for ensuring regular and better support to countries. These have been prioritized based on identified gaps and needs, and considering the Organization’s technical competence and organizational comparative advantage. Such activities are meant to be adapted, contextualized and implemented according to regional and national priorities. This publication is the result of a collective effort, and includes contributions from relevant technical units of FAO across global, regional and country levels. The development of this plan follows the publication and dissemination of the Organization’s School Food and Nutrition Framework, and provides the implementation roadmap to attain its expected results.

    2021
FAO’s work in nutrition enables healthy diets, advancing efforts towards reaching global nutrition targets and the Sustainable Development Goals. FAO’s Nutrition Strategy aligns with the Organization’s Strategic Framework to leverage all areas of technical expertise towards achieving the four aspirations of Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment and a Better Life. Forests contribute significantly to the food security and nutrition of at least 2.4 billion people. Steered by an agri-food systems approach and its Guiding Principles, FAO’s Nutrition Strategy recognizes the critical role of forest products and services in policies and actions for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive agriculture and food systems, food security and nutrition.
