Synopsis (short abstract) The Handbook offers guidance and tools for assessing the impacts of agricultural and food security programmes and projects on child labour in family-based agriculture. In addition, the Handbook aims to sensitize agricultural programme staff on the importance of incorporating child labour prevention as a crosscutting issue in their planning, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system and of systematically considering the potential positive and negative impacts of agricultural programmes on child labo ur. The Handbook furthermore encourages the user to identify good agricultural practices for preventing and reducing child labour in agriculture.

On 2–3 November 2021, to mobilize global action and highlight concrete solutions to eradicate child labour in agriculture, FAO, in close collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and in partnership with the International Partnership for Cooperation on Child Labour in Agriculture (IPCCLA) and the Alliance 8.7, organized a high-level virtual event: the Global Solutions Forum (GSF). The objectives of the GSF were to raise the voices and commitment of agricultural stakeholders, share game-changing solutions, and identify ways to step up concerted action to prevent and end child labour in all agricultural subsectors. The outcomes of the event are expected to inform the V Global Conference on Child Labour in 2022, along with other global initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Family Farming.

Emphasizing the values, principles and objectives contained in the regional and international conventions and charters concerned with the rights of children in general and combating child labour in particular, with a commitment to the objective of Sustainable Development Goal 8.7 (Combating Child Labour and Forced Labour) to end all forms of child labour by 2025, and recognizing the need to protect future generations and enforce their rights, the League of Arab States, together with its partners from Arab and other international organizations (International Labour Organization, Arab Labour Organization, Arab Council for Childhood and Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), has produced this study entitled "Child Labour in the Arab Region”. This region includes the 22 member countries of the League of Arab States. Based on national statistics, data, reports and key informants the report provides an overview of the main characteristics of child labour among different sectors of economic activity in the Arab region. It also examines the impact of armed conflict and population displacement on child labour. The report concludes with a number of policy analyses and proposes several recommendations to address the issue of child labour in the region, the most important of which is the development of a regional strategy to combat the worst forms of child labour.

The course has been designed to raise awareness and build knowledge among agricultural stakeholders about the importance of addressing child labour in agriculture, including livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture. It aims to build specific skills, depending on work-related responsibilities and tasks and/or interests, by providing concrete ideas and guidance that can be applied in real life agricultural policy and programming situations.
