Synopsis (short abstract) In the Near East and North Africa (NENA) Region, food imports are needed to meet more than 50 percent of total food requirements, yet nearly 50 million tonnesof food are lost or wasted every year. Reducing food losses and waste is critical to ensure sustainable food systems and increase regional and national food security, where the capacity to expand production areas is limited. Therefore, this project aimed at improving the availability and quality of foods in Egypt, Iran, Jordan and Lebanon by increasing capacities of different stakeholders in the food system to reduce food loss and waste along different functions of food value chains.

    The Russian Federation and Ukraine are major global suppliers of cereals and sunflower oil, while the Russian Federation is also a leading exporter of fertilizers and energy. Due to the devastating war in Ukraine, global prices for these commodities have reached record highs. FAO Markets and Trade Division, with the FAO Investment Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, have published this study on the potential impact of the war in Ukraine on food security and agrifood trade in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. Beyond a detailed analysis of how the war in Ukraine affects these countries, the report also contains a set of key policy recommendations to help governments cope with the unfolding situation and improve food security in the medium and long term. This publication is part of the Knowledge for Investment (K4I) series managed by FAO Investment Centre.

    Enhancing resilient livelihoods and food security of host communities and Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon through the promotion of sustainable agricultural development - Output 1 2023

    FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan, and in partnership with IFAD and WFP, launched the project entitled “Enhancing resilient livelihoods and food security of host communities and Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon through the promotion of sustainable agricultural development”. This project is funded by the European Union, through the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian crisis, the EU Madad Fund. The project addresses the reduced livelihood and food security levels in Jordan resulting from the crisis in Syria. It offers to tackle its negative impact on both refugees from Syria and host communities through support to the agriculture sector. This will be done by improving the agricultural productivity and farmers’ incomes, in addition to creating job opportunities for both host communities and displaced Syrians. The project will also promote social protection mechanisms for the benefit of the host farming community. The project also aims at creating adequate agriculture production support systems for vulnerable smallholders that support good agriculture practices and timely response to shocks and rehabilitate the capacity of the agriculture extension systems to be able to respond to the increasing demand for support due to the impact of the Syrian crisis. In addition, the project will support vulnerable smallholders and small family-based agri-food enterprises to increase the productivity and financial feasibility. The brochure will ensure the visibility of FAO and the partners, including the donor. It will provide information on the project and output 1.
