Reconstruir para transformar durante el periodo de respuesta y recuperación
2021Las perturbaciones provocadas por la crisis de la pandemia COVID-19 han puesto de relieve muchas de las debilidades de los sistemas alimentarios de hoy. Entre los principales desafíos se encuentran el acceso a alimentos seguros y nutritivos a precios asequibles en situaciones de restricción de movimientos y cierre de mercados, sumado a la vulnerabilidad de los trabajadores (en lo referente a salud e ingresos) en todo el sistema alimentario. Está en peligro la supervivencia misma de empresas e industrias, especialmente las micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas, desde productores, fabricantes, comerciantes y procesadores de alimentos, hasta transportistas y minoristas. Se han visto afectadas de manera desproporcionada las personas que trabajan en el sector de productos perecederos de alto valor e intensivos en mano de obra, productos que resultan esenciales para una buena nutrición, como son frutas y verduras, pescado y productos acuícolas, carne y productos lácteos. En muchos países, el gran número de personas que trabaja en el sector informal en todo el sistema alimentario ha exacerbado el impacto en los medios de vida. La pandemia de COVID-19 ha puesto de relieve las vulnerabilidades de aquellos países que dependen de importaciones de alimentos e insumos agrícolas, dando lugar a un nuevo debate sobre la creación de cadenas de valor más cortas para aumentar la flexibilidad y previsibilidad de los mercados y ayudar a minimizar las pérdidas para los productores. La pandemia ha acentuado la atención sobre muchas de las problemáticas que existen hoy, como la resistencia a los antimicrobianos, las enfermedades zoonóticas, el cambio climático, el fraude alimentario y la digitalización de los sistemas alimentarios, todas ellas con posibles consecuencias significativas para la inocuidad de los alimentos. Por otra parte, la importancia de preservar y proteger los recursos ambientales y la diversidad biológica como reguladores naturales de las enfermedades ha puesto el foco de la atención en la escala de destrucción de los hábitats naturales por los cambios en el uso de la tierra. -

Programa de la FAO de respuesta y recuperación ante la pandemia COVID-19
2021La crisis sanitaria de la pandemia COVID-19 está teniendo consecuencias de gran alcance en todos los sectores de la sociedad, incluyendo los sistemas alimentarios, los medios de vida y la seguridad alimentaria. Es imprescindible contar con información fiable y oportuna para anticipar y mitigar sus impactos negativos y especialmente para identificar aquellas áreas donde la pandemia está generando tensiones nuevas y sin precedentes. Los focos geográficos que tradicionalmente sufren de inseguridad alimentaria en contextos de emergencia son los más afectados, debido también a las dificultades para la prestación de ayuda humanitaria. Por otra parte, de acuerdo a la respuesta a la pandemia, podrían aparecer nuevos focos de inseguridad alimentaria, incluso en países y poblaciones que anteriormente no se habían visto afectadas por las crisis de seguridad alimentaria. Es importante actuar ahora para asegurar una recuperación efectiva tras la pandemia COVID-19, potenciar la resiliencia de los sistemas alimentarios y afianzar su papel en el crecimiento económico mundial. Con este fin, existe una necesidad urgente de proporcionar datos y análisis que respalden la formulación de políticas y el diseño de programas para evitar perturbaciones en los sistemas alimentarios, prevenir la inseguridad alimentaria y proteger los medios de vida de las poblaciones afectadas.

However, less attention is being paid to the biodiversity beneath our feet, soil biodiversity, which drives many processes that produce food or purify soil and water. This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats. -

2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
